Colds and flus are all over the news currently, and all over your workplace or child’s school. These common illnesses are responsible for missed work, missed school, and days of feeling completely miserable. Often we forget how important having a strong, healthy immune system can be in preventing and treating these illnesses. Naturopathic treatments enhance the role our own immune system plays. A variety of lifestyle choices and naturopathic treatments can help to support a person’s immune system and promote health through cold seasons.

A healthy, balanced diet rich in quality protein, whole grains, and a variety of fruit and vegetables is the foundation of a healthy immune system. A healthy diet provides the protein that our immune system is built from and antioxidants to fuel our natural defense mechanisms. Eliminating processed foods and sugar is important, as these suppress the immune system. Targeted supplementation including various vitamins, minerals, and herbs that both support the immune support and have an antimicrobial effect are helpful for additional support beyond what our diet can provide.

Regular sleep and stress reduction are also important pieces to a healthy immune system. Exercise helps to both manage stress and increase sweating which is beneficial. Quality sleep is essential, as it is when our body has the best chance to heal and fight infections.

IV therapies are one of the most effective naturopathic tools during cold and flu season. IV vitamins and minerals are used to strengthen the immune system by giving high doses of vitamin C, B-vitamins, Zinc, Selenium, and many others. When you are already sick or are being exposed to infections, IV hydrogen peroxide helps to both strengthen our immune system and act as an anti-microbial agent to kill viruses, bacteria, and fungus.

It is always important to remember that prevention is the best medicine. Wash your hands, cover your mouth, and focus on a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
