Down Syndrome

Published by Dr. Meghan Haggarty

Down Syndrome, also called Trisomy 21, is a genetic condition where extra genetic material is located on the 21st chromosome. This extra genetic material causes both physical and cognitive delays.  There are common physical health conditions associated with trisomy 21 including hypothyroidism, low muscle tone, short stature, hearing loss and congenital heart defects. Even though Down syndrome is a genetic condition, patients can benefit from a number of biomedical and naturopathic interventions.

Our naturopaths in Calgary recommend a full evaluation of hypothyroid including Free T4, Free T3, thyroid antibodies and reverse T3 in patients with Down syndrome. A high level of oxidative stress is also common with Down syndrome and patients can benefit from antioxidant support such as Vitamin E, green tea extract and glutathione.

Methylation defects are also common in patients with Down syndrome. Maternal methylation defects have been associated with risk of Down syndrome. Methylation genetic testing and organic acids can be useful for our Calgary naturopathic doctors to help to determine nutrient support to correct related to methylation. Common therapies used for supporting methylation include methylfolate, methylcobalamin, phosphatidylcholine, TMG and betaine. Research has also shown that nutrient status is altered in Down syndrome patients and they can benefit from nutrient testing and customized nutritional support.
