Colonic Hydrotherapy

Colonic Hydrotherapy is a therapy that typically addresses digestive disorders and bowel function. Toxins captured in fecal matter accumulate in the colon. This waste build-up impairs normal movement (peristalsis) of the colon walls. Colonics uses water to gently cleanse the colon eliminating accumulations of toxins and promoting healthy bowel function. Colonic Hydrotherapy is an important component of an overall treatment program at the Nardella Clinic in Calgary.

Benefits:

  • Healthy bowel function
  • Detoxification
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Reduced allergy potential
  • Increased Energy

DSC_7402 1Colonic hydrotherapy is used to promote digestive health, bowel function, and address chronic digestive disorders. Our large intestine is approximately 1.5 m long and over time fecal matter builds up in the colon. This affects the absorption of nutrients and the removal of toxins. Excess material affects peristalsis (natural movement) and colon hydration. Colonics use water to gently cleanse the large intestine by hydrating the colon and rinsing out old material. A colonic is different from an enema as it has the ability to cleanse the entire large intestine whereas enemas only clean the very end of the colon called the sigmoid colon. Although anyone can benefit from colonics to promote general health, colonics are a particularly important component of improving digestive health in a variety of conditions including:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Parasites
  • Candida
  • Dysbiosis (abnormal bacteria growth)

Colonic hydrotherapy helps to detoxify the colon and increase peristaltic activity. This promotes regular bowel movements and in turn many patients will notice increased energy, clearer skin, clearer thinking, decreased pain and bloating, and better health due to an increased absorption of nutrients.

Reflorastation

Reflorastation is a term used to describe the introduction of beneficial bacteria directly into the gut. Many people have heard about how probiotics can help with digestive health. Reflorastation after a colonic allows for the probiotics to get exactly where they are most needed- in our large intestine. The colonic treatment and reflorastation are done during the same visit so that toxins, old material, and any abnormal bacteria, yeasts or parasites are flushed from the colon and immediately after the probiotics are introduced to repopulate the colon and establish a healthy gut flora. Healthy gut flora has been shown to be beneficial in many ways including improved immunity, regulating bowel movements, and increased detoxification. Beneficial bacteria helps to normalize bowel movements in patients suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and helps to decrease inflammation in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Much of the nervous system is also in our gut so a healthier more balanced digestive system can also help to improve mood. The establishment of beneficial bacteria in the gut also helps to protect from recurrence of infections such as candida, Klebsiella, and Citrobacter. Our naturopathic doctors at the Nardella clinic in Calgary can help you to tailor a plan including colonic hydrotherapy to help you improve your digestive health.
